Who We Are
We are a small team with a big heart and a bold mission. Founded by Enoch, who turned his own journey from the streets of Mityana into a sanctuary for others, Grateful is a grassroots organization dedicated to the children of Uganda.
Our Mission
To turn the struggle of the streets into a journey of purpose. We rescue children from isolation in Mityana and provide the safety, care, and family reunification needed to ensure no child has to face the world alone.
Our Vision
A Uganda where every child is seen, loved, and raised in a safe family environment, empowered to reach their full potential.
From the Streets to a Purpose
Our story is not built on comfort. It is built on survival, faith, and love.
Grateful Children’s Orphanage was born from real life experience. From knowing what it means to sleep without food, without safety, and without someone to guide you. That pain opened our eyes to the reality many children still face every day.
But we refused to let that story end in suffering.
We chose to turn it into something greater.
What began as a small act of care has grown into a place where children are seen, protected, and given a chance to dream again. Not just a shelter, but a place where they feel they belong.
Along the journey, we learned something deeper. A child does not just need a place to stay, they need a family.
So today, our mission goes beyond rescue. We restore dignity, rebuild families, and create lasting change. Through love, guidance, and opportunity, we help children not only survive, but truly live.
At the heart of everything we do is one truth. Every child deserves a home, a future, and someone who believes in them.
But in the middle of that hardship, something stronger was born inside me: compassion.
A Vision Born of Pain
I began to see that the pain I experienced was not mine alone. All around me were children facing the same struggles—children without food, without shelter, and without anyone to believe in them. In 2012, I made a decision that would change my life forever: I chose to turn my pain into purpose.
I founded Grateful Children’s Orphanage as a place built on love and the belief that every child deserves a chance. What started as a small haven has grown into a home for children who once had nowhere to go. Here, they receive more than just food and shelter; they find education, mentorship, and a sense of belonging.
The Lesson: Homes, Not Just BedsAs we grew, we learned a vital lesson. While our orphanage provided a safe haven, we realized that the ultimate dream for every child is to be back with their own family. We saw that for many children, a bed in an orphanage was filled as soon as another child left. We realized that to truly help, we had to look deeper.
Our Evolution Today, Grateful has evolved. While we continue to rescue children from the streets of Mityana and provide them with sanctuary, we have pivoted to address the root causes of why they ended up there in the first place.
We Rescue: Getting children off the streets and into immediate safety.
We Restore: Using our community farm and skills training to prepare youth for the future. We Reunite: Working tirelessly to find families, strengthen them, and bring children back home. This journey has not been easy, but every smile and every successful family reunion reminds me why this mission matters. We aren't just running an orphanage; we are building a Uganda where every child has the opportunity to grow up in a family.
Our Values
In everything we do, we prioritize the child’s voice and wellbeing. We only pursue what is in their best interest, standing as their fiercest advocates and challenging any practice that stands in the way of their safety or dignity.
We believe true change happens from the inside out. We invest in the power of collaboration, guided by the collective wisdom of the Mityana community. We don't just work for people; we work with them to build lasting solutions.
We don't settle for the status quo. Whether it’s starting a farm to become self-sufficient or using technology to track our impact, we reimagine alternatives to ensure that children grow up in environments that are safe, sustainable, and full of opportunity.
As an organization, we are led by data, not just dreams. We capture precise information on every aspect of our work—from street rescues to family reunifications—using these insights to constantly refine our strategy and improve outcomes for every child in our care.
